Welcome message from the Dean
Welcome to the new digital format Annual Review from the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE). Increasingly, the MGSE has been producing more multimedia content, and sharing this content in a variety of ways, so the time is right to move away from print and display our achievements on a new digital platform.
As the newly appointed Dean, I would like to acknowledge the remarkable service and dedication of Dean Emeritus, Professor Field Rickards who provided leadership in a time of great change at the University of Melbourne as the Faculty of Education transformed to a Graduate School and introduced the Master of Teaching. It will be an enduring legacy. Professor Rickards has had a distinguished association with the University for more than 40 years and his influential scholarly contributions and outstanding stewardship as Dean have advanced the University’s teaching, research and international standing.
I would also like to acknowledge Professor Lesley Farrell who took over the reins in the interim before my appointment as Dean and guided the Graduate School throughout 2017. I would also like to thank Professor Rickards, Professor Farrell and all my colleagues at MGSE for so warmly welcoming me to the Graduate School.
The substantial work of the MGSE staff, I’m very pleased to report, has ensured that we continue to be number one for education in Australia and ranked six in the world in the 2018 QS Rankings by Subject. This recognition highlights the exceptional work of our academic staff and the quality of our graduates.
There is much to be proud of in this Annual Review, with many of our staff, students and graduates having been recognised for their expertise, for shaping the way education is delivered across Australia, and for influencing education internationally.
Our Annual Review illustrates that ensuring a high-quality education for every young Australian is critical and complex work, and that at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education we embrace our role to influence education policy, debate and practice.
I hope you enjoy reviewing the achievements of 2017 and please stay in touch with the Graduate School through our social media channels, our events particularly the Dean’s Lecture series, and through our MGSE website.
Dr Jim Watterston
